Enbrel, the most popular biologic drug for psoriasis is now required by the FDA to have a "black box" warning about the possibility of serious infections including tuberculosis. In fact most biologic drugs carry this warning already. What's more surprising is that Enbrel escaped this requirement for so long.
Will this change the way your doctor prescribes Enbrel? Unlikely...many dermatologists including myself already routinely check a PPD test for tuberculosis when prescribing Enbrel even though it was not an FDA requirement. Sometimes good medical practice precedes official recommendations.
