Definition:

Retinoids are a class of drugs derived from vitamin A. Retinoids allow for the beneficial effects of mega-doses of vitamin A on the skin while minimizing the toxicity of this vitamin. Some retinoid drugs include Accutane (isotretinoin) for acne, Soriatane (acetretin) for psoriasis and Targretin (bexarotene) for CTCL. While retinoids may have a more favorable side effects profile versus mega-doses of vitamin A, they have their own potential toxicities including severe birth defects, which limits their use.

Topical retinoids are also available including Retin-A for acne and Tazorac (tazarotene) for psoriasis.
